UCMAS

UCMAS (Universal Concept of Mental Arithmetic System) is a globally recognised and innovative brain development programme for children, offering measurable benefits and proven results for students in Cyprus and around the world. Founded in Malaysia in 1993, UCMAS has grown into the world’s largest mental arithmetic programme. Today, it is taught in more than 6,000 educational centres across 80 countries, including the USA, Canada, the UK, Spain, Germany, Russia, Malaysia, India, China, Australia, and Japan.
UCMAS was introduced in Cyprus in 2017 and is now taught in all districts across the island. It is the ONLY Ministry of Education-approved mental arithmetic programme in Cyprus.

Researchers have found that brain activity is stimulated through the interaction between the fingers and the brain. UCMAS is based on the use of the abacus, which children operate using the fingers of both hands to move the beads. Through a structured progression of UCMAS levels, children first learn to perform calculations using a physical abacus, and later develop the ability to visualise and use an imaginary abacus mentally. UCMAS has earned worldwide recognition for its internationally validated results. A study conducted by the University of Manchester (UK), involving 3,185 children aged 7–11 who participated in an intensive 34-week UCMAS programme for 1.5 hours per week, reported an increase in the children’s IQ levels. Additional research by the University of California San Diego (UCSD) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) found that, after UCMAS training, 400 children demonstrated superior mathematical calculation skills, working faster and more accurately than children who had not participated in the programme.

It is important to clarify that UCMAS is a brain development programme designed to enhance your child’s cognitive abilities. It does not replace or interfere with school mathematics.
